the establishment of a towel weaving plant in Yarraville Victoria
A bit about Dickies
Heritage
The heritage of the brand can be traced back to 1927 with the establishment of a towel weaving plant in Yarraville Victoria. The founding company was owned by a person of the name HB Dickie, hence the origin of the Dickies brand name.
Dri Glo
In the early days, the Yarraville plant competed with a Sydney based towel company that sold their production under the brand Dri Glo.
The Merger
Up to the early 1950's all towels were yarn dyed, as pieced dye towels were not I high demand. Also, many of manufacturers did not have the equipment to piece dye towels. In 1960 the Sydney company (Bonds) merged with the Yarraville company to sell both dickies and Dri Glo brands. The New company was called Bonds Weaving.
D uring the period 1960 – 1990 Bonds weaving went from strength, both brands were household names in Australia and New Zealand. Dickies and Dri Glo products were sold to all major retailers. In 1988 the site was sold and the whole manufacturing plant was moved to Devonport Tasmania.
In 1989 Bond Weaving was sold to Plam Beach an Adelaide based towel company. The Adelaide was closed and all manufacturing was done in Devonport Tasmania.
A new company was formed called Australian Weaving Mills (AWM). AWM continued to vigorously promote the Dickies and Dri Glo brands and enjoyed a very successful period.
In 2011 it was decided to shift the plant from Devonport to Wargaratta Victoria. Unfortunately this move was not successful and sales declined and manufacturing creased in 2017.
In 2017 Linen Source Pty Ltd purchased the Dickies brand to ensure that this iconic Australian brand would continue.
All Dickies branded products will be manufactured on Australian standards and represent the quality that Australian market requires and excepts.
